About the documentary
‘Mother Earth is calling her children home’
In 1968, medicine man Raymundo Tigre Perez (Mexico/USA) had a vision. He saw Indigenous Wisdom Keepers from all over the world united in a circular pit – with a fire in the heart – performing a ceremony. A spiritual ceremony for the earth, for peace and well-being of all living beings.
Only later he discovered that this was a KIVA, an ancient ceremony already used by the Anasazi 3000 years ago. Hundreds of native Wisdom Keepers answered his call and these KIVA ceremonies have been taking place around the world for more than 30 years. The KIVA ceremony is a collective CALL from the entire indigenous population: they have never lost touch with nature and with their Ancient Wisdom, they can lead us to a more connected and sustainable way of life!’
In this documentary we get a unique view of the KIVA Ceremony, where Indigenous Wisdom Keepers gather around a sacred Fire and express their love via prayers, ancient rituals, songs and dance. But they also share their concern about the care for Mother Nature and humanity!
Because of the touching prayers and the impressive conversations with the Wisdom Keepers –the viewer is invited to reflect upon how to heal our relationship with the Earth! ‘Because she is crying and is calling her children home!’ So the Wisdom Keepers carry out their final call through KIVA Ceremonies all over the world. And at the same time they bring healing and solutions, through their Ancient Rituals, Prayers and Indigenous Wisdom!

About the makers
Marijke: “In 2018 I got involved with the KIVA ceremonies – as a filmmaker and photographer – and was deeply moved. It felt like a homecoming, as nature has been my great inspiration all my life. Having worked for a dutch nature reserve organisation for over 10 years and having traveled the globe in search of indigenous tribes, it was ‘heart’blowing, touching and humbling to find these cultures all united in one place!
It became clear to me then – as the indigenous never lost their connection to nature and still hold the original instructions – théy are the ones that can guide us to a more connected and sustainable way of life, by teaching us how to reconnect with our roots.”
“I feel humbled that I was permitted to photograph and film at these unique KIVA ceremonies in Mexico (2018), India (2019), The Netherlands (2018/2019) and Germany (2021). To have had the opportunity to interview many Wisdom Keepers, as I’m just a messenger creating a space where their message and the importance of the KIVA ceremony can t be heard. A hopeful message in these times of chaos and division, a story of reconnection with Mother Earth ánd each other. Important messages shared not only via this documentary, but also via sharings of Wisdom Keepers and other speakers present at the documentary screenings.”

Marijke: ‘In 2018 I asked Rakinah if she would like to join me to visit the Kiva in Mexico. She knew of the Kiva but Mexico did not appeal to her and so initially Rakinah was hesitant. Luckily she quickly changed her mind and joined me. This trip was to be the anchor of our partnership. Shortly after getting back, on my birthday, Rakinah promised to help me realise my dream of producing the film. It was a huge undertaking and I was glad she offered her support.
We spent hours thinking about perspectives, concepts, themes, narratives and approaches. What questions did we want to have answered? What was our motive and for whom? What did we want the world to know?
A simple promise by my friend in a garden in Utrecht was the catalyst for this beautiful document 4 years later. Endless gratitude to her! We worked hard together and took the ups with the downs, a journey in itself. I can truly say that without Rakinah the film would not have seen the light. It has deepened our precious friendship of more than 26 years!

Marijke: ‘In 2021 I started looking for an editor to help out with the film. I had a full-time job and it would be an endless undertaking otherwise. I had collected over 100 hours of film material at 4 KIVA’s by then.
I got in touch with Jaap Verhoeven, a Dutch film maker, through a friend. His portfolio aligned with what we had in mind for the Kiva documentary, a good fit. Jaap lives in Vancouver, Canada so Zoom calls were our go-to mode of communication. In 2021 Jaap travelled to Germany to experience the Kiva first hand. In the evenings, in front of my orange campervan, Rakinah, Jaap and I would plan for the next day; review what was still needed and divide the tasks. His experience and contribution was clearly of value to us and the film.
After Germany we then spent weeks looking through the footage, discussing angles and approaches and reviewing edits. We procured music, selected photos, translated texts and so much more. It was truly challenging. But we got there!

Deze, voor onze tijd zo belangrijke film, communiceert mystieke diepte en opent onze ogen voor iets waar we totaal van afgedwaald zijn. Door de krachtige beelden in de verschillende rituelen proef je de diepe eenheid waar we diep van binnen allemaal naar verlangen. Het collectief dat in de energetische ruimte als zielsverbinding tussen elkaar ontstaat en waarin ook eindeloos ruimte is voor diversiteit, is een duidelijke richting voor onze toekomst.
A beautiful docu with honesty and hope
In the search of how to be of service in the world, Kiva showed me in an inspiring yet honest way how we can help and why. It inspired me to come together in circles and pray for ourselves and the world. As within so without, as above so below. Thank you Marijke for putting worlds together and I salute the work that has been done and still will be!

The photographs can be viewed at various locations. ‘She has captured wisdom, energy and light in vivid portraits, which when seen together, can inspire and guide us to live as our Ancestors once did.
